1. Preferably use kiln dried Logs or if you only have seasoned logs you can use these.
Chestnut Logs can only be used in wood burning stoves.
2. Stack & store your logs away from the ground, in a well ventilated area (undercover log store, sheltered part of the garden, garage, shed, driveway or outside space).
See our bespoke Log Store service.
3. Bring your logs inside to stand in the log basket at least 1-3 days before use.
4. Take two Logs and place them in the bottom of your fire or stove/burner in an
inverted V shape.
5. Create 5-10 balls of paper and place inside the V shape.
6. Take some dry cardboard such as delivery boxes and tear them up into small pieces and lay on top of the paper and logs.
The cardboard is more important than the paper!
7. Lay some Sussex Log Co. kindling on top of the cardboard – approximately 7-10 sticks.
8. Lay dry logs on top of the kindling. (Smaller Logs to begin with)
Ensure there is space all around the Logs for the air to circulate.
9. Check all vents are fully open and are clear of any obstructions or ash.
10. Light the fire and if using a stove/burner leave the door slightly ajar whilst the fire
establishes and the glass warms slightly.
11. Once the flames have grown and the glass has warmed, slowly close the door if using
a burner/stove. If using an open fire let the fire take hold before adding more wood.
12. Allow the fire to fully take off and get to its optimum burn point of around 300-350c.
13. Once this temperature is reached you can add more wood.
14. Ensure you clean the ash out regularly so air can circulate, keeping a small amount remaining.
